Make The Most Of Your Small Hallway With These 7 Ideas

Make The Most Of Your Small Hallway With These 7 Ideas

A small hallway doesn’t need to be a waste of space in your home. Often a neglected area, hallways can quickly become a sea of shoes, bags and coats. Although it makes these items easier to grab on the way out of the house, it isn’t always a nice sight to come home to on your return.

The hallway is the entrance area into your home, so create a welcoming space with our tips below.

Declutter

As tempting as it is to keep every pair of shoes and every handbag, these items often end up collecting dust in the hallway and go unused. Rather than using spare space in your hallway as storage, keep a ‘minimal mindset’.

Clear out items that havent been used for a long period of time. Not only will this create more space in your entrance hall, it will make remaining items easier to see and reach. This will allow you to use and rotate those remaining items more often. You will get more use out of items that otherwise could have been stuck at the bottom of the pile.

Mirrors

Simple but effective in a small hallway, mirrors can really help to make your entrance feel more spacious.

Hanging a mirror in your hallway will help light to bounce around the room, making the room feel large and airy. It’s also handy to quickly check your appearance as you leave the house too.

Simple shelving

Small floating shelves are ideal for storing items which are easy to lose, for example house and car keys. They can easily be placed up high too, so if you have smaller hands or paws that like to reach up onto surfaces, this keeps items up and out of harm's way.

In smaller hallways, a shelf can also provide a space for welcoming vases or flowers and family photos, to give a personal touch to your entrance.

Wall pattern

A small hallway doesn’t mean that it has to be plain and bland. Make the most of your wall space and single out a panel in your hallway for a patterned feature wall.

If you have an open space under your stairs, this can often get quite dark and is generally quite an uninteresting part of hallways. Add a splash of colour or a pattern to really bring some life into the room. Create a summery feeling all year round with bright colours and patterns, or use the wall as a display of your personal style with a unique design.

Patterned walls can also create illusions, so if you’re looking to make the most of the space, take a look at how you can use patterns to your advantage. Subtle stripes help to exaggerate a hallway's proportions. Opt for horizontal stripes to make walls feel wider, or vertical stripes to make the hallway feel taller.

Storage that fits the space

Despite taking a minimalist approach to your hallway, sometimes furniture pieces are needed to store away your everyday items. With careful consideration, you can still make the most of your small hallway space without furniture overpowering the room.

As mentioned above, floating shelves can be a great addition to a smaller room. If you choose to add more furniture to your hallway, the shelves can easily be added above the pieces to maximise the space available.

Narrow storage is also often a great way to use your small amount of space wisely. For example, tall shoe cupboards or benches are both great options for providing storage space while not taking up too much floor space.

You could also use space under the stairs to add a chest of drawers or drawer unit. This gives you more flexibility with the types of items you would like to store away and keep safe.

Turn small into cosy

If you have opted for items like a storage bench, you can also make this a multi-functional area of your hallway.

Add cushions and soft furnishings to create a cosy seating area; the perfect place for comfortably taking shoes on and off.

You can also utilise baskets and wall pegs for extra storage for a more homely touch. Baskets are a great way to create a cosy feel and can be used to store blankets or cushions that are within easy reach of any room in the house for as and when they’re needed. Hanging items on the wall also gives a welcoming feel to entrances, as guests can easily place their items up and out of the way.

Gallery walls

Gallery walls are a really quick and easy feature to add some personality to your hallway. They take up space but can really add character to the entrance of your home.

Whether you opt for family photos, quotes or art, make it your own and be creative. A gallery wall is a guaranteed way to make your hallway unique, which will delight anyone who walks through the front door.

Tip: Opt for light-coloured frames and pictures to compliment your hallway proportions.
