Bedroom planning is really important in ensuring your space is fit for purpose. It can also really impact your quality of sleep. Therefore, we’re sharing our tips on how to create the perfect sleep space in your home, to make sure you get a deep and peaceful sleep.

You don’t need to overcomplicate the bedroom planning process, just follow our tips below for some ideas on creating the perfect space for sleeping…

Choose your bed and bedding carefully

There’s no denying that beds are the centrepiece of every bedroom. That said, many of us have an uncomfortable bed or mattress, which negatively impacts the quality of our sleep.

Investing in a good bed base and mattress is important in helping you sleep well, but you also need to consider the character and aesthetics of your bedroom. With lots of options including under-bed storage, drawers, colours, materials and more, there are many ways that your bed can complement your style and needs.

Indulging in extras like thick mattresses and duvets with soft furnishings can also be a great way to improve your sleep quality.

Think about bedside lighting

Light is a powerful cue which informs your biological clock and helps to regulate sleep. Bedside lighting creates a cosy atmosphere and plays a practical part in the bedroom, however it can also play an important role in getting a good night's sleep.

Rather than harsh lighting from the ceiling light right before bed, bedside lamps can help the body relax more. Ensure that the bulb light itself isn’t too bright, so that your body can recognise that it’s winding down, ready for a sleep that is deep and restful.

Declutter your bedroom

Too much furniture and clutter can overpower the bedroom and for some people this creates a sense of chaos, which may make it harder to fall asleep. Having a clear bedroom can help with having a clear mind, which in turn allows you to have a better quality of sleep.

If you have lots of furniture in your bedroom, you could upgrade to a larger wardrobe. This will help to condense furniture, but still give you enough space for your belongings.

Create a cosy space

If you have a larger bedroom, you could create a cosy space to relax and unwind before you sleep.

A couple of comfortable armchairs provides somewhere to escape for a quiet read before bed, which will help your mind to unwind. Reading is also much better before sleeping than using technology, as the brightness and blue light from screens wakes you up, making it harder to switch off for a good night's sleep.

Opt for relaxing decor to help create a cosy feel within your bedroom. Calm, warming or neutral colours are all good options for bedrooms, as they create a sense of tranquility and relaxation - the perfect atmosphere before sleeping.

Control the natural light

Choosing curtains or blinds can seem like a simple decision when it comes to decorating your bedroom. Although, it can be one of the most important rooms to get right when dressing your windows.

However you choose to dress your windows, they should complement your bedroom colour scheme and style. That said, ultimately they must be effective at keeping light out to ensure that you get a good quality of sleep. Shutters, curtains, blinds or a combination of all three, should be thick enough to block any natural or street lighting to enhance your sleep quality during the night.
