9 Space Saving Ideas To Maximise Your Small Bedroom’s Potential

For those of us with small bedrooms, every bit of space is valuable. Despite trying to find the best layout for the room to maximise space, there is normally a better way to make the most of every last inch of the room.

A quick Google search brings back a huge number of DIY and space saving ideas, some can be pricey, some can be time-consuming and crafty. Luckily for our readers, we’ve compiled a list of fuss-free yet impactful space saving ideas, so that you don’t have to tackle the long list of search results.

Read on to discover your bedroom's true space saving potential with our simple storage suggestions…

Flush furniture

Freestanding furniture can provide a sophisticated look and feel within a room, however they are often bulky and require a lot of space.

If more compact furniture is to your taste, you can really make the most of the space in your room. Furniture like the Denerio can sit flush to the wall in your bedroom. This allows you to use all available space in a useful way, compared to chunkier freestanding furniture that is typically placed within the room, resulting in unused space.

Wardrobes tend to be one of the biggest items of furniture within a bedroom. If you have a large wall space, dedicate that wall space to your wardrobe. With lots of space not only for clothes but other belongings too, you would really be maximising your space and giving yourself more storage options.

Find unused space

If you have any of the freestanding furniture mentioned above, then you may already be aware of some unused space within your bedroom. That said, space around furniture is not the only place that valuable space could be being wasted.

Aim to discover unused spaces. There may be space that can be put to much better use with a better solution than how your room is currently set up.

One typical culprit of harbouring unused space is wardrobes. If your clothes don’t reach the bottom of the wardrobe, use storage boxes to allow for more areas to keep your belongings.

You can also add hooks to the back of your wardrobe doors for extra hanging space. Then, use this additional space to hang clothes, accessories or even bags to hold other smaller items.

Space underneath windows are often left unused too. You may have seen the fancy ‘window seats’ that lots of articles suggest to make in these spaces? However, a much simpler version is a traditional bench or storage trunk; a fuss-free alternative to providing additional space within a small bedroom. It also requires much less DIY effort - bonus!

Store seasonal items

If you’re not looking to change any furniture, find ways to make the existing space work better for you.

Remove any items of clothing or accessories that are seasonal and store in a different room. Pack away into storage boxes, into your loft, or somewhere that you don’t tend to access daily. This will free up space that you use more frequently, which can then be used in a more efficient way.

Seems simple right? It is! But we don’t always tend to use our time to carry out this task each time the seasons change. Dedicate a bit of time to rotate your clothing and you’ll really be able to see the benefits in the additional space that it creates for you.

Opt for a smaller sized bed

Although it is nice to live the life of luxury in a hotel style queen sized bed (if your room allows), is that the best way to use your limited space?

Of course you can opt for comfort, but if you’re struggling for space downsizing your bed provides more potential for a small bedroom.

Double beds are still unbelievably comfortable and are large enough to provide a good night's sleep. They also allow for a little bit more free space which may be the difference between nightstands or no nightstands, drawers or no drawers.

Bonus tip: Look out for beds with integrated storage like the Milo bed. There are lots of beds out there which cleverly combine comfort and practicality.

Add an ottoman

Ottoman storage boxes are also a great piece of furniture for making good use of space in a small bedroom.

Small enough to fit into many places, they can double up as a decorative feature within your room. For example, use the space for storage but display home accessories on the top to suit the style of your bedroom, as shown in the image above from @sivesshomedecor on Instagram.

Savvy spare room storage

Sofa beds or day beds are great options for spare rooms. Not only do they provide a bed for guests, they allow for extra room or storage space which you can use to your advantage.

If you don’t have space in your main bedroom for a big wardrobe, opt for a daybed which includes drawers. You can use this as extra storage for clothes that you may be struggling to fit into your own bedroom. When guests come to stay, they won’t know any different as they will be neatly stored away.

The Trundle Bed from our GUMI range is a great option for spare rooms. Not only does it provide some additional storage space, you can also pull out another mattress if you need more sleeping space. Store the bed away when it’s not needed and you have created a huge amount of extra bedroom space.

Use alcoves and odd spaces

If you have an alcove or odd space within your bedroom, don’t let the space go to waste. Measure it up and search for furniture that would be a snug fit to make the best use of the space.

For example, with accurate measurements you might find shelving units, drawers or a small wardrobe to fit in the space. It may be a tight fit, but it makes the space a lot more useful for day to day life than leaving it empty.

Floating shelves

Floating shelves are such a versatile item of furniture. A great way to maximise your small bedroom space is to add floating shelves along the perimeter of your walls.

No space is more unused than the 12 inches of wall below your ceiling. It’s also often forgotten about too. However, that space can be put to good use with floating shelves as another way to either display home accessories, or store belongings like books or plants.

Above your bed is another place where floating shelves can look great if you have the space available. They provide a really homely feel and can be an alternative to bedside tables if your room doesn’t have space beside the bed for furniture.

Double duty furniture

Another space saving idea is to double up the usage of any furniture that you do have the space for. When choosing furniture, think about it’s intended use and how you can get the most use out of it.

Bedside tables are really popular pieces of bedroom furniture. However without storage, they simply provide somewhere to put your phone, book or other nighttime essentials. Finding a bedside table with drawers provides additional space for smaller items, which could then free up space in other areas of your bedroom.

Chest of drawers with a larger surface space can also double up as a vanity unit. You can use the top of the drawers to display perfumes and other vanity items, or place storage boxes to match your bedroom decor on top of the drawers. This creates an aesthetically pleasing way to store more items, without eating into any more space within your room.
